Field notes on the disqualification call: what the platform already does for free, and the exact line where it stops being enough.
Some of our sales calls end with us recommending the free option. On purpose, and on the record.
A founder books a demo, shares a screen, and somewhere around the second question the product count settles the matter. We tell them to keep their money. Selling infrastructure to a store that needs an assistant fails slowly and in public, and we would rather lose the invoice than the log entry (our account team has made peace with this, mostly).
To defend that habit, we do the homework. Every Shopify Editions cycle we open the platform's own docs and list what it now does for free that someone, somewhere, is still paying for.
The homework keeps getting longer
Sidekick is included with every Shopify plan; features and usage limits vary by tier, but the assistant itself comes with the subscription. It sits in the admin, answers questions against your own store data, edits products, drafts reports, and generates content on request.
Shopify Magic is the generation layer, free regardless of plan: product descriptions, email subject lines, headings, blog drafts, background removal on images. For a founder writing their own catalog, that is a real writer, on demand, at no extra cost.
Then storefront search. On Shopify's Grow plan and above, semantic search turns itself on: a buyer types "something to wear in the summer" and gets shorts, because the engine matches meaning instead of keywords. No app to configure, no toggle to find; the help docs say plainly that you don't need to turn it on. The cap is 200,000 products. If that ceiling sounds far away, good; this article is in the process of saving you money.
And the free layer is climbing. The Winter '26 Edition shipped over 150 launches and enhancements, including Sidekick Pulse, which surfaces suggestions before you ask, custom admin apps generated from a prompt, and Flow automations built from a plain description of what you want. Our read, not Shopify's roadmap: none of this slows down.

We sell catalog operations infrastructure for a living. Watching the platform absorb the shallow end of that market should worry us.
It doesn't, because of the shape.
The shape all of it shares
Every native AI feature above works the same way: a merchant asks, the AI acts, the merchant approves. Shopify's own documentation is explicit that Sidekick makes no changes without approval. For an assistant serving every merchant on the platform, that is exactly the right design.
It also draws the line for you. An assistant runs at the speed of your attention: brilliant per question, silent between questions. Magic will write you a strong description in seconds; it holds no opinion on whether the rest of the catalog agrees with that description, and nobody is asking it to check.
Below a certain size, that gap does not exist, because your attention covers the whole catalog. You know every product. The assistant extends you, and that is the entire job.
Above a certain size, the catalog stops fitting inside anyone's attention. Variants drift, taxonomy rots, translations lag, and every question nobody asked compounds quietly between demos. The tool didn't get worse. The store outgrew the question-and-answer loop.
The line has a number
We put it at $250K a month in store revenue. Under that, our honest advice is native AI plus a few well-chosen App Store tools; it is why we ship SPLIT and ARRAY there instead of pointing a sales pitch at you. Above it, catalog work becomes a continuous function that has to run whether or not anyone is watching, and that is a different product category from a chat box.

The catalogs we operate past that line total 642,000+ SKUs. None of them got there on better questions.
What we tell founders under the line
- If the whole catalog fits in your head, Sidekick plus Magic is your team. They come with the plan you already pay for. Use them hard.
- On Grow or above, semantic search is already running; Shopify includes it automatically once the store qualifies. Free conversion work you may not know you have.
- The line is attention, and attention has a revenue proxy. When product data problems start outliving your interest in them, you have crossed it.
- Our bet, dated and on the record: the native layer keeps climbing, and by the end of 2027 it will cover most of what under-the-line stores pay apps for today. If we're wrong, we'll grade ourselves here.
So yes, most stores that ask us about catalog infrastructure should not buy it. Keep your money and let the platform's assistant carry you, because until the catalog outgrows your attention, it will.
Then call.
If you're not sure which side of the line you're on, OKART's Infrastructure Stress-Test maps your catalog against it, read-only, in 48-72 hours.
